My Road Bike
What a speedy machine this is! This is my Cannondale R1000si which incorporates a CAD5 technology aluminium frame. This bike, at present, is still stock and is a fairly recent acquisition. The jury's still out on the stock Cannondale Expert saddle, I'll probably replace it with a leather Brooks Team-Pro in the near future (Done!). The bike weighs just a little over 18 lbs and rides like a dream!
Gear shifting is indexed and controlled by Shimano STI (Shimano Total Integration) combination brake/shift levers or brifters, which are the best type of set-up for today's road sport/race bikes. Campagnolo - the other main manufacturer of road bike components - also have a similar system to STI, named Ergo. Quick shifts whether one is riding on the hoods or in the drops is easily accomplished with these type of shifters. I'm a big fan of STI and I even used the same system on my touring bike for quite a few years.
One interesting component is the "Hiddenset" headset. Normal headsets have cups at top and bottom, this bike has an oversize head tube, that is machined to accept the Campagnolo sealed bearings directly, hence the "Hiddenset" terminology.
This is just a bike for fast road riding and due to it's inherent lightness and geometry, it would be unsuitable for loaded touring or trail riding. I commute on this bike when the weather is nice and I can carry minimal gear. The bike doesn't have fenders, so riding in the rain is something that I try to avoid doing with this bike... Well why not? I've got other bikes to ride in foul weather!
